Research and research support at the Leopoldina

Leopoldina holds research projects on the history of science. Since 1992, the Leopoldina has taken advantage of available opportunities to promote the work in this field. Research into the history of the Academy was made possible in externally funded projects with money from the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung – BMBF), the Founders’ Association for German Science (Stifterverband für die Deutsche Wissenschaft) and the Volkswagen Foundation (Volkswagen-Stiftung).

The Leopoldina mentors two of the present 160 projects under the Academies’ Programme which is one of the biggest research programmes of the humanities in the Federal Republic of Germany. Otherwise they are handled by the state academies which are members of the Union of Academies. It promotes long-term fundamental research in the humanities.

In 2004 the Leopoldina installed the “Joint Academy Initiative on Aging in Germany”. This is a joint project of the Leopoldina and the German Academy of Science and Engineering acatech. The starting point for the initiative was the demographic changes taking place in Germany, and the consequences and issues that ensue. Within three years (2006-2008), the initiative intends to develop and present the best scientific evidence and alternatives for comprehensive options for social reform.

The Leopoldina also supports the education of young scientists by means of a support programme, the Leopoldina Fellowship Programme.
