The “Leopoldina Fellowship Programme“ was initiated by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) in 1997 and has been supervised since then by the Academy. The “Leopoldina-Postdoc-Stipendium“ (Postdoc Funding) is granted to junior scientists from Germany, Austria and Switzerland who have demonstrated outstanding scientific excellence. Other nationalities cannot be supported. The programme is part of the Academy’s role in supporting future generations of scientists from German-speaking countries.
To be eligible for the programme, post-doctoral fellows must be younger scientists from Germany, Austria and Switzerland working on natural sciences or medicine. They should possess an independent research profile and, if successful, will receive funding for research at a leading research institute, normally abroad. Fellows from Austria and Switzerland have to conduct their research in Germany.
Funding is provided for two years, in exceptional cases three years. Upon returning to their home country, the fellows are expected to use their newly achieved qualifications to strengthen the science-base. The current budget is sufficient to support about 35 fellows per year. Generally about 20 new fellowships are granted each year.
Every two years, the Academy invites former Leopoldina Fellows to present the results of their Leopoldina-supported research at an Academy meeting. Additionally, the Academy supports an “electronic network” that was formed by Fellows to facilitate contact and information interchange between current and former Fellows.
